I was thrilled to get to attend CES (the annual Consumer Electronics Show held in Las Vegas) in January 2017. The show receives international coverage for its cutting edge products, and many of the biggest companies in the world debut their newest items at the event. In addition to the big companies though, the show is also a hot ticket for startups looking to get their products noticed.
I spent some time checking out the smart home products and wearables in Eureka Park, where all of the best startups gathered to show off their offerings. Check out 15 of the coolest, most interested products I discovered!
Have you ever lost the key to your padlock? Whether you suddenly can’t access your bicycle or gym locker, this can be a frustrating situation. More than that, padlocks are notoriously easy to pick and therefore not as good at securing your belongings as you’d hope. The Benjilock is a simple, sleek, and smart solution to this problem. The lock opens only by pressing an approved fingerprint against it, giving you peace of mind from a security perspective as well as added convenience of not needing to carry around a key to open your lock.
Anyone who has been in a long-distance relationship, or had a job that requires them to travel far away from their children, knows that keeping in touch can be difficult. The Parihug has created a unique and fun way to keep users connected with their loved ones from afar. Two smart stuffed animals are purchased in a set, and when one is hugged by one user the other will hug another user back no matter how far away the pair is. A simple, sweet way to keep in touch.
Wearable trackers are hot right now, but most are known for tracking information about physical fitness. The Feel wearable focuses on another important aspect of health: emotional fitness. This wristband tracks your emotions throughout the day and helps give you advice on how you can better manage your emotional well-being.
4. Sound Virtualiser
One of the coolest sections of Eureka Park at CES is the are where universities are able to showcase their own inventions. I made a stop at the University of Southampton booth, which was full of interesting creations. One device, the Sound Virtualiser, takes home audio to a whole new level. The product pinpoints users’ ears and directs the sound to them, so even as you move around your living room you’re getting the optimal audio from your speakers.
At IndieGoGo’s huge booth, I found a variety of interesting new smart products. The SmartPlate stood out as a unique and useful design. This plate takes users’ meals and instantly analyzes and tracks the nutritional facts about them. An ideal invention for anyone trying to lose weight or stick to a health-conscious diet plan.
When I saw the FoldiMate, the first thing I said is “My husband would be so happy about this!” I am notorious for doing laundry and never folding the clean clothes. In fact, I would be willing to say that folding clothes is my very least favorite household chore! This device does the folding for you, and there’s even an option to purchase an additional steam setting that will steam your clothes as they are folded… ideal for anyone who wears dress shirts on a regular basis.
There were lots of robotic “assistants” on display at CES 2017, but one I think you might see a lot of is the Heasy. This robot is designed to assist with customer service at stores and other public establishments. Heasy answers basic questions, allowing for a more convenient and streamlined experience in your favorite local stores.
These smart headphones combine the technologies of many of the most popular products on the market today. The Vinci headphones allow you to control your music with the sound of your voice, track your fitness, and even place orders at your favorite local sushi restaurant. They’re essentially personal assistant headphones, and as an added bonus they look really awesome!
9. Tinker Bots
Kids can get in on the smart product action, too. Tinker Bots allow users to build their own robots out of a variety of parts, making their own toy creations come to life. Once built, the robots can be controlled via a smartphone application. A fun and educational way to teach children about robotics and technology.
Smart products are often known for creating convenience, but more and more they are also creating safety. The Nimb ring looks like a fashion accessory, but is actually a ring with a panic button. If you find yourself in an unsafe situation or a health emergency, pressing the button will notify a list of your choosing that you need assistance.
11. Play Date
There’s nothing I hate more than having to leave my dog for a long day. The Play Date ball is a great option for those times that I can’t be at home. The ball can be controlled remotely via a smartphone application, and has a high resolution camera that allows you to visually check in on your pup while you get in your long-distance game of fetch.
The ON is a modern turntable with an old world, classic feel. It can be connected to a computer through a USB cord, or to mobile devices through a Bluetooth connection. We just love the combination of an earthy, traditional appearance with this very modern product.
Owning your own pool sounds like fun and games until you start dealing with the day-to-day upkeep of one. Blue, which won an innovation award at this year’s CES, takes care of most of the work for you. A smartphone application allows you to monitor the current chemical balance and cleanliness from afar, and it even gives advice on how you can make improvements so you’ll have the cleanest pool on the block!
The XPUMP is a little device that packs a big punch. This connector hooks up to any audio system or headphones and amplifies the sound, giving you the optimal sound experience. It can be used to take your laptop’s sound system and turn it into a home theater quality experience.
We love products that bring smart technology into our daily routines, and what better way to do that than with a smart mirror that helps you get ready every morning? The Ekko allows you to listen to music, the news, radio, or even get a makeup tutorial while you get ready to take on the day!
The new products unveiled at this year’s CES will help solve a variety of predicaments to make your life easier. It is fascinating to see the world of smart home products expand, and these startup products are just one piece of this exciting puzzle!
