There is much talk about what smart home product people should buy first. For the uninitiated, the amount of products out there can be overwhelming. Choosing the right product to start with comes down to each home owner’s needs. Some may prioritize lighting or entertainment – the vast majority choose security to invest in first. But even within these categories there are many products, and it can be tough to decide which you should start with.
Disclosure: We often get review units from companies to run reviews. This time I actually bought the Chamberlain MyQ myself and the story below is 100% true.
For me though, my choice was made through my own dumb absent mindedness.
I had been researching smart home products for months without making a commitment. I didn’t feel an immediate need for the convenience, and since I live in a fairly safe neighborhood, I didn’t feel any pain points around security. Maybe you feel the same right now.
My moment of clarity came when my sister and her new husband were visiting from out of state. Seeing as I live in California, they wanted to visit the beach 50 miles from my home. Early in the morning we piled into the car together and went to the beach.
I have a normal 3 step routine; I back out of my garage, close my garage door, and leave. That morning my sister remembered that she had forgotten something as I was backing out of my garage. When she came back, I left, skipping Step 2.
Mid-day, I got a call from a neighbor who asked me about it and kindly offered to close the garage and leave through the front door. At that moment I knew I needed the Chamberlain MyQ garage door controller.
I bought the Chamberlain because it has a solid 4 star review on Amazon, is compatible with a lot of non-Chamberlain garage door openers (mine is a Linear), and was recommended to me by the neighbor that called me. And if you’re going to expand your smart home, the MyQ is also compatible with the Wink Hub as well. You can check our best smart Wi-Fi garage openers here.
Installation was easy and took me about 15 minutes. I immediately set up the MyQ to send a notification to my phone if my garage is open for 10 minutes or more. That way the next time I head to the beach, I can make sure my garage and all the tools I have inside are safe.
If you are worried about the security of your garage and would like the ability to control it from the convenience of your smartphone, it is available now here.
