Following the Amazon event that kicked off in Seattle — which saw the unveiling of several new products — the company showed off one device in particular that’s quite, well, interesting.
It’s called the AmazonBasics microwave which, at first glance, is nothing more than your average microwave. Except, it’s powered by Amazon’s voice assistant Alexa and syncs up with the Echo smart speakers you may already have in your home.
What Cool Stuff Can the Amazon Microwave Do?
The Amazon microwave includes Alexa support built-in, so you can talk to it.
Obviously, no one is going to a new microwave from Amazon if it doesn’t do some cool stuff, right? Alexa support is pretty cool, but Amazon’s microwave also has a dedicated button so you can call upon her quickly.
Saying something like “Alexa, one potato,” for instance, will set a timer and turn it on automatically. The microwave has a bunch of presets for different foods and meals so no more guessing cook times.
Also integrated into the microwave is Amazon Dash functionality, and Wi-Fi which Amazon says was tough to get working. Dash, if you don’t know, is a quick order service that works with Amazon to reorder regular items at the push of a button. If you run out of paper towels, for example, you can push a dedicated Dash button to send out an order for more, and they’ll be sent to your doorstep within hours.
You can pre-order the microwave now through the company’s site, and it costs $60. It’s expected to ship sometime later this year.
The company also unveiled a few other devices at the event including a new Echo Dot, an Echo Auto system, Echo Subwoofer, a wall clock, smart plug, and updates to their existing devices.
