Everyone has something they’re prone to forgetting with frequency. My best friend misplaces her cell phone at least five times a day, and my husband is constantly resetting his email passwords because he can’t remember which password goes with which account. My frequent forgetfulness is all about whether or not I locked the front door. I’ve turned my car around halfway to dinner to double-check my locks so many times that my friends know it’s the reason I’m late.
So, to say that I was excited about the prospect of a smart door lock is an understatement. My biggest takeaway from this introduction to smart door locks is that they’re useful for far more than just easing your “did I forget to lock the door” fears.
I was given the opportunity to check out August’s just-released smart lock and install it in my own home. Watch the video below to see how I installed the device, and to hear my personal review of the product.
August Smart Lock Installation & Use Guide
Disclosure: August provided Ideaing with this smart lock for review.
The August smart lock is simple to install and set up with the August mobile application. You don’t even have to remove your existing deadbolt during installation, the August lock just attaches to the back of any standard deadbolt. Many other smart door locks require a much more complication installation, and the easy process that August provides is a big check in the “pro” column.
Once paired with the application, a simple press of a button on your cell phone rotates the lock into both the locked and unlocked positions. You’ll also still be able to lock and unlock your deadbolt manually in the event that you need to.
August has done an excellent job making sure that their lock is compatible with a wide range of third party applications that make it even more useful. Apps like Doorman (an app that allows you to let a postman unlock your door to drop off a package) and AirBnB (which lets renters have temporary access to your house) connect seamlessly with the August lock, allowing you simple control over letting people into your home.
One potential negative of the August smart lock is that unless you’ve paired it with an August smart doorbell, you’ll need to buy an additional device (the August Connect) to be able to access your lock outside of bluetooth range. So, if you want to be able to lock and unlock your door while you’re away from home, you’ll need that additional device.
Remote Locking and Unlocking
If you’re like me and you constantly worry about whether you forgot to lock your front door, getting a smart lock is a no-brainer. No more turning around halfway to dinner (and driving your spouse crazy in the process!) You’ll be able to check the status of your door through the August smartphone application and adjust it if necessary. This new model also is Home Kit enabled, meaning you can use Siri from your iPhone to unlock or lock the front door using your voice. If you purchase the August Connect, you can unlock or lock your door with your smartphone from anywhere in the world. Also with the August App, you can set your lock to automatically lock after a certain time or automatically unlock when you arrive within close proximity from your home.
You can enable your August Lock to automatically lock or automatically unlock when you arrive closer to home.
You’ve probably heard news reports, especially close to the holidays, about packages being stolen from people’s porches. Doorman, an application that works in connection with August’s mobile app, allows postmen access to your home for just long enough to drop off a package. Once the drop-off is complete, you’ll be able to see that your door is re-locked and the postman has moved on to his next delivery.
Dog Walkers and Housekeepers
If you have employees who help you with household tasks, the August smart lock will allow you to let them into your home without having to make a copy of your house keys. If you’re out of the house while your dog walker or housekeeper is working, the August application will also notify you when they enter and exit your home.
AirBnB and Other Visitors
AirBnB has become a popular way for homeowners to make extra money renting out their homes. The August smart lock connects directly with AirBnB to allow temporary access to only users who are logged into their AirBnB accounts. This adds an additional layer of security, and lets you know that your home is secure even when renters are there.
A smart door lock is useful for personal guests as well. If friends or family come to stay with you, you can grant them access to your home through the August application much like you would with AirBnB guests.
In the event that you aren’t able to get home in an emergency, the August smart lock might prove invaluable. If there is a fire (even a brush fire nearby), a power outage, a flood, or any other event, you can grant temporary access to a neighbor or local friend to save your pets or help preserve your belongings.
The August Smart Lock is a great choice for anyone who wants a smart door lock that can be installed and used simply. This is a user-friendly device that already integrates with every well-known application in the smart lock market. It also has a great deal of potential, because August has proven that they’re committed to making their products compatible with new technology and applications, you can expect that any new uses and applications for your smart lock will be easy to enable with this lock over time.
We do recommend that you invest in either the August Smart Doorbell or the August Connect to get the full remote benefits of this lock, but that is a small price to pay for this well-designed and intuitive product. August even has a Smart Keypad if you don’t want to take your phone out of your pocket to unlock your door. For other Smart Door lock alternatives, check out our best door locks here.
