The travel industry is huge. In the United States alone, there are approximately 67,000 (give or take) businesses valued at US$20 billion in the tour and activity space. This means that it’s the third largest segment of the travel industry after air and accommodation. Whoa!
I’m a stat machine, if you haven’t noticed, and when it comes to the travel industry, I know these statistics mostly because I travel a lot. By both air and vehicle, I’m away practically every other weekend.
This means that I need to keep my devices charged with me wherever I go. From the airport to the car, I need to make sure my iPhone and laptop are always charged. I rely on it with the type of work that I do (educating you!), so if I have a dead phone or laptop, watch out. I’m not a happy camper.
This dog gets it.
So, I decided to find some of the greatest portable chargers on the market that will be on your side whenever you travel, whether it’s by train, plane or automobile.
What is a portable charger?
A portable charger is just that – something that you can bring with you anywhere (portable) that charges your devices (charger). Most will take a charge and give charge via USB ports.
Why you need it…
If you bring your devices with you everywhere while you travel and are away from a wall charger for some of the day, you’ll benefit from a portable charger. Or, if you simply wear out your smartphone so badly on and airplane or during a long road trip that you need to charge your device every few hours, this if for you, too.
Installation & Ease of Use
Portable chargers are as easy as it gets. Plug and go.
The price for the portable chargers I have found for you (below) range between $15- $200, depending on features and functionality.

7. Belkin MFi Certified Portable Valet Charger
Have an iPhone? Get a charger that’s made for you.
I’m an Apple girl through and through. I’ve always had iPhones, since I was 16 or 17 years old, which means that I’m always looking for products that work for me.
So when it comes to a charger, it’s important to have one that is made for you. Just like you wouldn’t purchase a charging cord from a regular ol’ store for your $700+ smart phone, the same can be said for a portable charger.
The Belkin is just that. It’s developed for iPhone exclusively, and even has a magnetic charging module for Apple Watch. The Belkin also comes with a Micro-USB port to charge the battery. This device charges an Apple Watch from 10% battery life to 100% 8 times over and an iPhone 6 times. Ah-mazing.
The Belkin is available for $96.00.
6. ZeroLemon ToughJuice
When you travel, you need a charger that’s built to last.
When I travel, I often find that I don’t take the best of care with my products. I throw my backpack, my luggage is thrown around and I’m 100% focused on getting to my destination as quickly as possible. With that, I find that my products (like my laptop, phone and chargers) aren’t necessarily protected. So, when it comes to chargers in particular, I know I need a product that is tough and nearly indestructible.
The ZeroLemon is just that. It prides itself in being the toughest external battery pack around, and it’s fantastic because it fits around your phone instead of requiring wires. It offers anti-shock casing, meaning that the exterior makes it perfect for the outdoors and the on-the-go (traveling) crowd. Picture yourself on a road trip, hopping out of the car to take a photo of beautiful landscape, then rushing back inside the car to keep hitting the open road. It’s ideal for an adventure.
Bonus: The ZeroLemon can charge an iPhone up to 11 times or the MacBook once.
The ZeroLemon is available for $67.99.
5. HiIkyu Portable External Battery Charger
Say no to clunky chargers while traveling.
It should come as no surprise, but I don’t travel lightly. I pack so much when I’m on the road – too much – which means that every pound in my luggage counts. So, when I’m in the air, I need to be cautious about what I’m packing with me and what I leave behind.
The HiIkyuPortable External Battery Charger is ideal for those of us who travel via air regularly. It’s super portable – measuring 3.8 x 3.2 x 0.9 inches – and is so light, you can barely feel it in your purse or carry-on bag. It also has three connectors that can charge iPhone, iPads or Android devices. This product is catered toward users who are charging their smart phones while traveling, as it does not have laptop charging ports. The product can be used portably, and it also contains a wall charger for use when you’re waiting in a terminal or in your hotel room.
This portable external battery charger from HiIkyu is available for $24.99, making it one of the most affordable on my list.
4. Poweradd 2nd Gen Portable Charger
Don’t hate me ’cause I’m beautiful…
When the iPhone 7 came out, I had two options: get the 7 Plus in white immediately, or wait three weeks and get the 7 Plus in black. I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand phones that come in white, so it was worthwhile waiting for my dream phone – even though I can’t stand a waiting process.
The same can be said for other products and chargers. That’s why I included this portable charger from Anker on my list. It’s simply beautiful. Take a look at that rose gold…
(It also comes in black, white and gold).
When it comes to the product itself, however, it’s quite impressive. This Anker Poweradd 2nd Gen Portable Charger allows for simultaneous charging of your iPad, iPhone, Android and more at high speed. You can charge your iPhone four times on just one charge of the portable device.
It’s also super safe – there are built-in multiple intelligent security protections for overvoltage, overload and short circuit protection.
Back to the aesthetics, if you want a beautiful portable charger, this is it.
The Anker Poweradd 2nd Gen Portable Chargeris available for $15.99.
3. Xiaomi Power Bank 20000 mAh Dual USB Port External Battery Charger Pack
Being able to charge everything while you’re traveling is important.
I’ve provided a number of portable chargers on my list up until this point, and now I’m ready to show you the Holy Grail of affordability-meets-function.
The Xiaomi Power Bank 20000 mAh Dual USB Port External Battery Charger Pack is ideal for travellers who aren’t looking to spend a fortune on a charger, but want to charge it all. I’m talking smartphones, tablets, and more – at the same time. Traveling with a buddy? No need to wait until he or she is done charging their phone – you can charge yours at the same time with this Xiaomi Power Bank. Users can charge two devices at a time with this portable pack, which is ideal if you’re traveling with a friend or partner.
Added bonus – you can charge this device with your laptop, so if you’re stuck with just one outlet in an airport or hotel, don’t fret.
The Xiaomi Power Bank is available for $49.98.
2. Aukey Portable Charger
When a “quick” charge just isn’t quick enough, you need something faster than you’ve ever seen.
We have all been there; sitting in an airport lounge or perhaps a rest stop while on the road, waiting for our smartphones to charge. And it takes for ever. You have to hop on that plane, or perhaps you need to keep on the road for fear of it getting dark.
Whatever the case might be, you need a portable charger that offers not just a quick charge, but a super quick charge. You need something that gives you juice in the blink of an eye.
That’s exactly what the Aukey Portable Charger is. This charger offers something called Quick Charge 3.0 – meaning you can charge compatible devices up to 4 times faster than conventional charging. Now that’s impressive.
The Aukey charges your devices through lightning cable or micro USB cable. It’s available for $49.99.
1. Omni 13
I always save the best for last – and this one is a showstopper.
If you’ve read my articles before (you know you have…) you’ll be well aware that I always save the best for last. And when it comes to portable chargers, this Omni 13 is a true show stopper.
The Omni 13 power bank is the world’s smallest smart charging system (awesome). Taking a look at the photo above, you can see that this device offers what no other devices on my list have – a 3 prong AC/HVDC socket and 2 USB fast charging ports.
But wait, there’s more!
The Omni 13 also offers solar charging (whoa), a universal charging port, an OLED screen, power safety protection and more.
It’s practically magic, and it comes at a relatively steep price tag for a portable charger. This device is $199.00 on their website here.
I always have a portable charging device with me wherever I go, and you can see why – I love using my devices, like my smart phone and laptop. In my search for the best portable charging devices while traveling, I found these top seven that I am thrilled to share with you.
