Monitoring the air in your home has been integral to home safety for many years. In fact, having functioning smoke and carbon monoxide alarms is a requirement in many states today. Most traditional air monitors, however, only alert people of a danger by making noise within the home.
Yet from a user perspective, what would happen if you’re away from the home? Perhaps sleeping? Would you rely on a noise within your home to alert you of upcoming danger? If you’re not home to hear your alarm go off, traditional smoke and air monitors are effectively useless. The same applies to smart home security, which we cover here.
Enter the smart home technology solution to air monitoring: smart Smoke & Air Monitors. This is one of my favorite articles I’ve written because it could truly save lives, something that smart devices have sought to impact, though smoke and air monitors are truly making a lasting difference.
What Are Smart Smoke and Air Monitors?
These are devices which connect with your smartphone, via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, to update you about changes to your home’s air quality, smoke detection and, in some cases, even allow for remote control. They monitor your home through connected devices.
Why You Need It
Many of these devices will help to save your home in a fire by alerting you of the danger while you are away. However, they can also be helpful for anyone who suffers from various allergies or is sensitive to high pollutants in the air and can truly create peace of mind when, say, you are in the office and your children are at home. You know your home is safe and that your family has a safe place to be, filled of clean air and alerted the moment smoke or air quality is impacted.
Installation & Ease of Use
Most of these products are easy to install and set up. In fact, several of the devices below require little more than taking the item out of it’s original packaging, downloading the corresponding app and connecting to your smartphone to become functional. However, there are always options for professionals to be hired to come and install these products for you. Especially if you decide to go with a product that requires replacing your entire existing smoke and carbon monoxide detector system.
These products tend to have a wide and varying cost range. Depending on which product you choose, you can expect to pay anywhere between $50-$250. With that said, very few additional items (if any at all), are necessary for these product to function. Really the only other requirement is that you have an associated smartphone.
