Everyone has a vice, and mine is that I’m messy. Judge me all you want, but there’s plenty of evidence that messy people are more intelligent than our cleaner counterparts! Although, smarts doesn’t make my house a lovely and livable space.
My husband is also what you might call a “neat freak,” so I have had to learn to force myself to be marginally clean. It is legitimately difficult for me to carve out time to devote to this, though, not only because I obviously don’t enjoy housework but also because I work from home. Anyone who telecommutes knows that it is hard to turn yourself off of work mode, so once I finally do end my daily office hours the last thing I want to do is deal with chores!
Smart products work to make your entire home more automated, so that you spend less time doing banal, everyday tasks and more time just enjoying your highly functional home. This is especially apparent when it comes to smart cleaning products. These innovative devices are simple to set up, and once they’re running they’ll do most of the housework for you! Honestly they’re a dream come true for people like me.
Below are 5 simple ways to make your home cleaner, and save yourself time in the process!
1. Vacuum Your Floors Without a Second Thought
Ugh, vacuuming is the worst. Stop doing it!
Vacuuming is one of the most time consuming household tasks, and also one that takes a lot of effort and stamina. It is all-around unappealing. Unfortunately, not vacuuming leads to floors full of dust, dirt, and germs. This is especially bad if you’re an allergy sufferer like me, but even if you aren’t the idea of floors full of grime probably makes you squeamish.
Robotic vacuums, like the Dyson 360, are one of my favorite smart products, because they practically eliminate the need to focus on a task that I despise! Once you get the vacuum’s settings working well with your house’s specifics, you’ll have clean floors all the time without giving a second thought to the cleaning process. Plus, these robots look like cute little futuristic companions!
2. Get a Smart & Sanitary Trashcan
Never open the gross trashcan lid with your foot again.
Do you ever cook with eggs? Geez, it is so gross. Egg shells are a mess, and the yolks are runny. The trip between the cracking of the eggs and the trashcan is always a harrowing journey for me. I don’t want to drip yolk on the floor, or even worse on the lid of the trashcan. (In my mind, getting raw egg on the lid of a trashcan is a straight shot towards giving my entire family salmonella poisoning.) My typically solution is to awkwardly hold the eggs in both of my hands while opening the trashcan lid with my foot. Super graceful!
A trashcan with an automated lid, like the iTouchless Deodorizer seen above, which opens in response to motion detection, would drastically improve my kitchen’s cleanliness and my own cooking process. Whether you’re dealing with raw mat packages, dirty paper towels, or a fistful of eggshells, there are many times where opening a trashcan becomes awkward and contributes to the spread of germs in your kitchen. An automated version is a simple, but very effective, solution.
3. Measure Air Quality Constantly
Kick that persistent cough with cleaner air.
We often focus on cleaning the obvious items in our house first, namely the ones that we can see. A messy countertop or window is easy to catch, but what if the dirtiest thing in your house is the air you’re breathing? It’s a pretty terrifying concept, because you may have an air quality problem and not know it. This issue can contribute to a variety of serious health conditions, so it is important that we don’t let what is out of sight be out of mind.
A smart air monitor like the Awair, will tell you everything you need to know about your home’s air quality. It will also teach you how to make improvements to your indoor environment, to create a healthy and clean space. Even though you might not be able to see the results, you’ll certainly feel their effects!
4. Get Rid of Germ-Prone Items Like Soap Bottles
Seriously, think about all the germs that must be living on your current soap bottle.
The concept of a bottle of hand soap, or even hand soap with a pump is flawed to begin with. Your hands are bound to be dirty every time you touch it, and most people don’t wash their hands properly to begin with, so you’re really just helping germs to continue living in your home. Many household cleaning products are like this. You inevitably end up touching them with dirty hands and thus the cleaning products themselves become part of the problem.
This is one of the issues that smart home products have worked to resolve. Products like soap dispensers that produce hand soap based on motion detection, like the iCooker Automatic Soap Dispenser, ensure that you never have to touch the product itself. Your bathroom and kitchen sink won’t carry extra germs, but you will still need to remember to wash your hands correctly!
5. Order New Cleaning Products On-the-Fly
If you want to force yourself to get interested in cleaning, combine it with shopping!
One of the biggest impediments to cleaning up around the house is the availability of the specific products you need. If I’m out of glass cleaner on the day I think of washing my windows, odds are I’m going to skip out on going to the store and just forget about the chore entirely. A well-stocked closet of cleaning products makes it much easier to quickly make your way through tasks that cannot (yet) be automated by smart home products.
Amazon’s Alexa will allow you to order anything under the Amazon sun on demand. Simply verbally ask Alexa to place the order, and you’ll have a box of brand new cleaning products on your doorstep in a matter of days (or hours if you live in an area with Amazon Now!)
Cleaning isn’t anyone’s cup of tea, but smart home products are making it easier to automate the process. By making it simpler to get your home in pristine condition, you’ll get time back to do things you’re more interested in and have a healthier living space.
In some cases, these products even make cleaning feel almost fun. Who doesn’t want a cute little robot to follow them around and clean up their floors?
