MIDI controllers run the gamut from cheap to expensive, and are just as diverse when it comes to their feature-sets. For the most part, you get what you get and don’t have a lot of options when it comes to customization. Not many MIDI controllers are portable either, which makes it difficult if you’re always on the move. I don’t know about you, but I know a lot of musicians and they rarely stay put in one place!
Rhythmo’s Beatbox Kit aims to address many of those concerns simply by offering a customizable DIY cardboard-based kit. In short, it means you can create your very own MIDI controller from the ground up including building the hardware and configuring the software to match your needs! There are even plenty of resources to help you learn how to create and play your own songs with the device, making it accessible for all experience levels from beginner to advanced.
What Is the Rhythmo Beatbox MIDI Controller Kit?
The kit comes un-assembled, and you must build, learn and create it from the ground-up!
Here’s the official rundown: “The Beatbox is an all-in-one DIY MIDI controller kit” that can be used as a drum machine, mobile studio, and more. It’s equipped with its own battery so you can use it anytime, no matter where you are. Once it’s all hooked up, you’ll be “making music in minutes” just like you would on a conventional controller or using a keyboard.
The kit comes with everything you need un-assembled, meaning you have to put it all together. The good news is that there’s no soldering required and the instructions are quite detailed. Everything can be connected quickly or screwed on with little to no difficulty.
Despite it’s cardboard composition, Beatbox looks fantastic.
Thanks to Beatbox’s DIY nature, Rhythmo claims it has “more use-value after creation” then comparable controllers. More importantly, you’re not locked in to a particular software or application when it comes to using the device. If you already have software you love — referred to as Digital Audio Workstations or DAWs — you can continue using that with Beatbox. But don’t worry if you’re new to the scene, the kit also comes with all the software you need to start making music. The Beatbox mobile music production app, for example, allows you to create music right on a mobile device or compatible tablet. Rock out with your smartphone out!
Perhaps the best part is that the Beatbox is portable and even includes a built-in carrying handle. This allows you to use the device anywhere, whether you’re isolated in a bedroom or studio or part of a live performance at a local hotspot.
Where Do I Get One?
You don’t have to buy additional DAWs to use Beatbox. It works with existing software and even includes a mobile app for creating beats on-the-go.
To help get the project fully funded, the Rhythmo team has turned to Kickstarter where it’s launched an active campaign. If all goes to schedule, the first kits will ship out to early backers sometime in March 2020. The kit should be available through retail, and for everyone else, shortly after.
It’s difficult not to get excited for this project, especially if you love to tinker and create your own gear! Resourceful creators can even take the internals and put them inside another custom case — imagine 3D printing your own?
