My Mom lives in a big brick house with plenty of acreage. She has lots of space to roam, which is great for my dog, but it makes me worry about her, especially in the evenings. She lives alone, and though she has a dependable (and traditional) alarm system, home safety and security stats have certainly scared me lately. With more than 4,300 burglaries happening every single day—equating to nearly 1.6 million annually—within the United States, safety is paramount.
That’s why I started on a quest to find home security for any budget. Regardless of your financial state, we should feel safe and secure in our homes, which is why I was so passionate about finding the best of the best products that can work for those of us who are seeking to spend at any budget level, from $200 upgrades, to those of us who are ready to shell out a small fortune for security.
What exactly is smart home security?
Smart home security includes connected devices, devices that can be controlled through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. The options presented on this list vary in terms of product offering, though they are all ‘smart’. Smart home security products are managed through your smartphone; think of smart cameras, locks, doorbells and more, completely monitored through your iPhone or Android device.
Why you need it.
I started this list as I was concerned about my Mom being at home alone throughout her day and night. For others, you might be purchasing to protect yourself in your home. Smart home security products are excellent to help protect your home and protect others; it’s a completely advanced route of home security, instead of your traditional devices that often require a third party to monitor through call centers, for example.
The cost of the products on this list vary, though they are outlined between $200 to over $1000, in combination. I have made recommendations based on budgets and suggested package solutions.
Smart Home Security For Any Budget – 2017
Below are product options that will help protect yourself at home, regardless of your budget. I’ve divided based on products within varying budgets from $200 to $1,000 and more.
Here are 3 home security products you can buy for $200 or less
If you are just getting started with your smart home security or automation journey, a great budget to stay within is $200. It’s just enough to bring a great product home, one that you’ll certainly be impressed by, but not significant enough to break the bank. This is a great option for those who want to give smart home security a try first before moving any further down the pathway to a truly smart home.
To stay within $200, I’ve compiled a few products that are very impressive for their price tag. These work great alone, but you can always add to it later (such as the additional options I’ve included in varying sections below).
For smart doorbells, Ring has unveiled the long-awaited Ring Doorbell 2, an upgrade to the popular original Ring Doorbell. The Doorbell 2 comes with a rechargeable battery, so you can easily slide off and charge when it needs some juice (instead of taking off the entire product when a charge is required). The Ring allows you to monitor your one 24/7 through a smartphone enabled doorbell and video combination.
In addition to the simple ease of using your smartphone to unlock your front door, the August offers a unique and secure approach to safety. It’s a secure and keyless system that works with iOS and Android smartphones so you can let yourself (and others) into the home without a key. The device is powered by batteries, and it will work even without Wi-Fi. The August Smart Lock works great with the Nest Cam, which allows you to view your home through your smartphone at all hours of the day, 24/7 life streaming.
These products are all around or under $200 and can be found below. They are great options for new smart home users to get into the security market.
Here are two combinations of security products we recommend for $500 or less
If you already own one of the products above, or perhaps you’re ready to take the next step in investing for your secure smart home, the next bundle of security products are for those who are ready to spend about $500. Instead of recommending smart home security products individually, I’m pivoting to recommend combination packages that you can purchase and connect as a DIY project. I’m pretty excited about these. While these products are excellent as stand-alone options, they’ll perform even better when connected and combined together.
The August Pro and the Keypad work in synchrony. The Keypad pairs with the Smartlock and allows you to enter your home, even if you forgot your keys (or our phone). When placed within Bluetooth range of the actual lock, the keypad will allow you to enter your home with a code. If the code is correct, it will send a signal to the door and voila – you’re unlocked.
The Doorbell comes in for added safety and security measures. If another member of your family is entering the home, for example, you can monitor just who they are by watching the video stream on the doorbell in real time.
This combination is ideal for those of us who have homes, properties, garages. The combination above can be used anywhere, from apartments and townhouses to single-family dwellings, though this combination is specifically for outdoor security. The Ring Doorbell, Stick-up Cam and Chamberlain MyQ 301 will work in synchrony to monitor and alert you of any suspect activity outdoors.
The Doorbell is, of course, available to use when visitors approach your home. The Ring Stick-up Cam is made for the outdoors, as it detects monitor and triggers the smartphone app for notifications when someone is at your front door. The MyQ garage door controller enables users to open and close their garage from anywhere. If your kids are driving home, for example, and they’ve forgotten the garage door code, voila, Mom and Dad save the day.
Here’s a full home security solution for less than $1,000
Congratulations! You like what you see at both the $200 and $500 price point, but you’re convinced that a secure smart home is for you; so, you’re read to invest more. You’re ready to head into the market with a full home security solution that is around $1000.
Similar to the best home security solutions for less than $500, this combination takes your investment up a notch and our first combination is all about August, with a side of Chamberlain.
The August Doorbell Pro features full color HD video alongside HindSight, a feature that captures video even before people arrive. It replaces your existing wired doorbell and provides the security you need to ensure you always know who is at the door. This, combined with the August Smart Lock Pro, allows you to control your for and keep track of who comes and goes. You can automatically lock your door from your smartphone, meaning you can secure your home even if you are already at work. It also works with Apple HomeKit.
To top off this combination, we’ve included MyQ once again (not only because we love it so much, but because it is the icing on the cake for safety and security). Your home will be covered from your front door to your garage.
This combination is ideal for users who travel frequently as it includes the Reolink Argus which is a battery-powered Wi-Fi security camera. At the price point of $84.99, you can purchase a few and install in your home. This is a wireless security camera that offers 1080p HD video with night vision, 130-degree wide viewing angle (perfect for security), it’s weatherproof, and features two-way audio/ Combined with the Wink Bright, it’s a match made in heaven.
The Wink Bright is a combination that includes light bulbs and a hub, along with an app that allows you to control most other smart home gadgets so you can see everything from one app. It comes with settings that can make it look like you are home even when you are away. Wink can turn your lights on and off in a realistic pattern. The Amazon Echo completes the list as both devices can be managed through voice and automation.
