The bots are a little quirky, sure, but they can also do some cool things like open doors, trot alongside you, or enact your world domination plans. According to a TechCrunch report, you may soon be able to own one of these lovely creatures for yourself.
Yep, pretty soon—as in 2019 soon—you may be able to buy a robot dog of your very own.
The SpotMini Robot Dog Will Be Commercially Available by 2019
Hopefully, you’ll be able to customize the color. I want mine to have a glow-in-the-dark finish.
The robot dog in question is called the SpotMini, and moves around on four legs. Boston Dynamics has shown it going up and down stairs swimmingly in the past. So, if you own a two story home, townhome, or apartment you don’t have to fret about your little guy getting around.
The founder of Boston Dynamics, Marc Raibert said he got the idea to make the robot dog commercially available “by thinking about what could go in an office — in a space more accessible for business applications — and then, the home eventually.”
So, naturally he started to consider how the robot dog could help around the office, and then jumped right to it being used at home.
Oh, and like my creepy cat, SpotMini can open doors too.
How Much Will SpotMini Cost?
Cute little guy. It resembles the kind of pet that Skeletor might have, right?
Unfortunately, we have no idea or even an estimate about the potential price of Boston Dynamic’s robot dog SpotMini. More than likely, however, it will be obnoxiously expensive. One can hope it’s the opposite, but that hope will probably be shattered.
The company is set to develop and launch 100 models sometime later this year for commercial use and deployment. After that, they will focus production on commercial availability, which is set to be complete in 2019.
Who wants a robot dog, raise your hand?
