Sleep is important. But many of us don’t get a good night’s sleep, and that’s a shame since going without your beauty sleep can have harsh effects on your body beyond baggy eyes in the morning. According to Web MD a lack of sleep can dumb you down, make your susceptible to diseases and even lead to a higher risk of accidents.
There’s a lot of smart tech out there recently that aims to improve this situation for people from smart sleep trackers, white noise machines, etc. But I found something unique that hits home a little more than the rest.
A company called Chili Technology makes a product called the Ooler that is basically an AC unit built into a blanket. Launched via successful Indiegogo campaign in 2016, the Ooler helps people who have hot flashes, live in areas that get absurdly hot (Today almost hit 100F today), or have a partner that has a naturally higher or lower comfortable temperature. It also uses temperature differences to help your deep sleep cycles last longer to help maximize your energy in the morning.
How does the Chili Ooler Work?
The Ooler is a smart controlled blanket that can both heat and cool your bed. Chili Technologies boasts that it can adjust up to a 15 degree difference between ambient temperature, which means it can be 90 degrees in your house and you can be sitting pretty in a 75 degree blankie.
There is a control unit and mattress pad with water running through to help heat and cool your bed. It works via evaporation, so you do have to refill water once in a while, but there’s a low water indicator to help make sure you never run out.
With the app, you can set a schedule to make your bed toasty warm before you jump in, or cool it down on a hot day. If your spouse has a different preference, there’s a dual control version as well. This is the part that interested me in this product as I like to sleep cool but my wife has to always be warm. With the Ooler, I can turn down the temp on my side and increase it on hers.
Benefits of the Chili Ooler
There are a ton of benefits for using the Ooler, but I’ve thought of a few that might be on particular interest.
Chili claims that lowering your sleeping temperature during the night helps you extend deep sleep cycles to allow you to feel more refreshed. Combined with a warmer bed to greet you to fall asleep, this could really affect people like me who never get a good night’s sleep.
As mentioned earlier, the dual zone controlled version can help couples who prefer different temperatures. It’s almost 100 degree today but my wife will still sleep with a down comforter. It’s uncomfortable for both of us when I just want a sheet. We’ve somehow learned to origami our bedding to keep both of us satisfied, but I’m sure our struggle would be reduced if we could each pick a temp we like.
One thing not mentioned on their site that I thought of was reduced home AC use. If you’re used to cooling your house at night, using a local solution that can keep you cool at night can definitely reduce the amount of electricity you use powering your AC unit. And if you don’t use an AC but toss and turn due to it being super hot at night, this could be reasonable solution to sleeping comfortably.
That leads me to think about people going through hot flashes. If you’re hot with a fever or hot flash, you can cool yourself off quickly with the Ooler. For menopausal women, this could work with the dual control zones to cool your side off without freezing your husband.
There’s a lot of benefits to be had with the Ooler. Coming from an Indiegogo campaign just a few years ago to a mature company now, it could be a good time to grab one of these.
Where to buy
The Ooler Sleep System can be had on their website. The “Me” version with single zone control is only available in Half Queen, Half King, and Half California King. The “We” version with dual zone control or available in Queen, King, and California King. To give an example on price, the Queen version is $1,399. Given that the price of a good mattress can be a multiplier high and good comforters can go for more than that as well, this is a reasonable price for a good night’s sleep.
Shipments start July 1st, so I recommend that if you want one now you go to their site and order soon.
