Like humans, animals can have health issues that stem from overeating and inactivity. In fact, 56 percent of dogs and 60 percent of cats are classified as clinically overweight. Worse yet, obesity in animals can lead to a decreased life expectancy and when you’re talking about a domesticated family member, shorter life spans are no good.
So, it makes sense to promote a healthy lifestyle in your pets not just to keep them happy, but also to keep them around longer. This isn’t always easy to do, but luckily, there’s something coming that can help with that.
It’s called VARRAM the Pet Fitness Robot.
What Is VARRAM?
Varram is a robot companion for your pets.
As the tagline implies, Varram is a pet-friendly robot. It includes a bevy of features meant to promote a healthy, active lifestyle for your furry companion. More importantly, it’s meant to stimulate your pet even while you’re away — such as when you’re at work.
For starters, Varram can move and navigate on its own. Just set a playtime for your pet and it will handle everything else. But to augment the time it spends with your furry friend(s), it can also administer treats. It essentially rewards your pet when they do something good, just as you would. The idea is to improve your pets behavior through positive reinforcement.
You can also adjust settings and interact with the robot via a mobile app. Options include setting scheduled treat and play times, toss counts, sleep time and control routines.
What’s Varram Made of?
Varram is super easy to clean too, which is necessary when you’re dealing with dog slobber.
As with most tech devices, it helps to know Varram’s specs. Those are:
- ARM Cortex-M4 MCU processor
- Sensors: 6-axis 3D digital accelerometer, 3-axis magnetic sensor and 3D digital gyroscope
- IR laser for distance measurement
- 9-Core IMU sensor
- High-strength geared motor
- Bluetooth 4.2 wireless connectivity
- Li-Polymer 3.7V 800mAh battery with 10 hours of operation
- Made of FDA approved polycarbonate and silicone
Of course, all of those features and specs combine to make one incredibly durable and smart device.
Varram also comes bundled with a USB charging cord, several pairs of tires, a cat toy attachment that resembles a fishing tackle, and some food containers. After launch, the Varram team also plans to offer optional accessories.
What Else Can Varram Do?
Varram can spit out treats to reward your pet’s good behavior.
Varram is meant to be your pet’s best friend when you’re away. Because it keeps them both occupied and happy, it can help reduce depression and anxiety in your furry friend, which results in more positive behavior. For example, a physically active and happy pet is less likely to create messes — like getting into a trash can or chewing couch cushions.
It works the same for cats and dogs alike, and the included toy attachment will provide as much entertainment for cats as dogs.
Furthermore, the AI software inside Varram is designed to learn an animal’s personality and react accordingly. Every pet is different, so the robot analyzes their behavior and mood constantly to understand the context of what’s happening. The developers claim this allows the robot to know exactly when a pet wants a treat, yet should also be allowed one.
Where Can I Get One?
Varram can avoid obstacles and furniture on its own.
To seek funding, the Varram team turned to IndieGoGo. You’ll be happy to know, however, that the campaign raised 545% more than the intended goal, which amounts to more than $600,000. Estimated delivery was February 2019, but has since been updated to sometime in March for early backers. Everyone else should be able to buy the Varram robot shortly after.
